Positive Pay Fraud Protection

Prevent Check and ACH Fraud Before It Happens

Positive Pay provides your business with a proactive layer of fraud protection by verifying every check and ACH transaction against a list of authorized items. Discrepancies surface as exceptions, and you decide whether to pay or return.

How Positive Pay Works

1

Enter Your Issued Check Information

Enter check details manually in Business Online Banking, or upload a check issue file generated by your accounting software. Access under Accounts > Positive Pay.

2

FSB Verifies Checks Automatically

As checks are presented for payment, FSB automatically cross-references each one against the issue file you submitted. Checks that match clear without interruption.

3

Receive Exception Notices

If a check does not match, such as the wrong amount, number, or payee, it is flagged as an exception and you receive a notice the following business day. Review your exceptions daily before 11:00 AM.

4

Pay or Return

Log in to Business Online Banking, review each flagged item, and decide whether to approve or reject the transaction. Exceptions not reviewed by 11:00 AM are automatically returned.

11:00 AM daily cutoff: Exception decisions must be submitted by 11:00 AM each business day. Items not reviewed by the cutoff are automatically returned to the presenting bank.

Positive Pay Coverage

Two layers of protection work together to cover both check and electronic payment fraud.

Check Positive Pay

Every check presented for payment is verified against your issued check file before it is cleared from your account.

  • Upload issued check data manually or by file import
  • Catches altered check amounts, forged payee names, and duplicate presentments
  • FSB also verifies all checks presented at FSB branch locations through Positive Pay
  • If discrepancies arise at the branch, FSB contacts your business before processing

ACH Positive Pay

Control which companies are authorized to debit your account via ACH. Any transaction outside your approved list is flagged as an exception.

  • Maintain an approved ACH vendor list in online banking
  • Unauthorized ACH debits surface as exceptions for review
  • Set rules by company name, SEC code, or dollar threshold
  • Provides an additional layer of security alongside check Positive Pay

Frequently Asked Questions
